Woman’s body wrapped in material found on west Phoenix roadside

A woman’s body was found wrapped in material on a roadside in west Phoenix on Feb. 6, officials said.

According to a news release from Phoenix police, officers discovered what appeared to be a body near 55th Avenue and Broadway around 10:49 p.m.

Officials were initially unable to determine what the object was because it was wrapped in a large amount of material, the release said. Detectives began collecting evidence in the area out of an abundance of caution, police said.

A few hours later, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office took possession of the wrapped remains.

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Jioenise Summerfield and detectives are investigating her death as a homicide.

Police did not release any other details about Summerfield or her death, citing the ongoing investigation.
