The massive winter storm that swept across the country over the weekend knocked out power lines, wreaked havoc on travel and dropped nearly two feet of snow in some states, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service.
Heavy snow fell in more than a dozen states from New Mexico to Maine. Preliminary data shows that Lake Bonita in south-central New Mexico received 31 inches of snow over the weekend, the snowiest region in the United States.
Crested Butte, Colorado, a former coal mining town turned ski resort about four hours from Denver, also saw record snowfall totals, with 23 inches falling between January 24 and January 26.
Here are the other three places in the U.S. that saw the snowiest weekends, according to preliminary weather service data.
western pennsylvania
New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Pittsburgh in the western corner of the state, had the most snowfall in the eastern United States: 23 inches. Several other nearby towns had similar totals, including Siegel (22 inches) and Sisenbury (20.8 inches).
Catskills, New York

Communities near the Catskill Mountains along New York’s Hudson River also saw the largest snowfall totals. According to preliminary data, 22 inches of snow fell in Fairview, N.Y., a few miles north of Poughkeepsie, West Shokan and Haines Falls.
Massachusetts
Several towns north and west of Boston received about a foot and a half of snow. Sterling in Worcester County received 22.2 inches of snow, while Middleton and Peabody on the North Shore each received 20.5 inches. Milton, south of Boston, has an elevation of 20 inches.
