Claudio and Giovanni Reyna, Tyler Adams and Christian Pulisic are just a few of the many American players who have chosen Germany as their first step into European football.
The Bundesliga’s relationship with the United States has a long history and continues to grow – through partnerships with two top clubs, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga is now strengthening this connection with a new, non-traditional talent identification campaign.

The Bundesliga has partnered with Top Baller to launch a multi-city 1v1 championship series for U16 boys in the United States. The first of four qualifiers has already taken place, with the final scheduled for April 2026. Goal: Discover elite prospects in an environment designed to reward individual skill, technical ability and intensity.
“The partnership with Top Baller is a perfect fit for us. It is a very young and dynamic event that recognizes great players and speaks the language of football development, rather than in a paid way, which is very important to us,” Bundesliga Executive Vice President Americas Robin Austermann told Bulinews.com exclusively.
“At the same time, it aligns with a holistic approach to creating engaging content and telling stories to a wider audience.”

Generous rewards for breakthrough performers
Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig ensured that the fixtures were adequate, providing important opportunities to the outstanding participants.

Each tournament winner will receive a spot in the Bayern Youth Cup qualifiers next summer. From there, players can represent Team USA at the Munich Youth Cup or receive an invitation to Bayern’s Global Academy program.
At the same time, RB Leipzig will send scouts to attend the competition finals and select two rookies for a week of training at the German club’s academy.
Both clubs already have strong ties with Major League Soccer. RB Leipzig has a close relationship with its American sister club the New York Red Bulls, while Bayern Munich has a global football development partnership with Los Angeles FC under the name Football Red and Gold.
“It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” Osterman said. “If this tournament can strengthen youth football activities at Bayern and Leipzig, then we will also benefit from it.”

The road to Bayern Munich meets a new platform
Bayern Munich operates a well-structured global scouting approach through the FC Bayern Pathway, an ecosystem of domestic and international training camps that allows young players to be evaluated by real Bayern staff.
Bayern Americas managing director Julia Willer believes in new US 1v1 tournament Fits naturally into the framework.
“This is a great opportunity for us to participate in and complement our existing FC Bayern Munich pathway. It allows us to engage with talent at an early stage and connect grassroots football with a professional club environment,” Willer told Bulinews.com exclusively.

“The whole idea of building community and giving undiscovered talent a chance to be seen and shine is very much in line with our values.”
In addition to talent identification, Wheeler emphasized the value of competition as a way to connect with the next generation of supporters.
“It’s also a unique opportunity for us to engage with a younger audience. The tournament is different, fast-paced and dynamic, which is part of the reason why it attracts so much attention across different platforms. Overall, the tournament is a great way to showcase FC Bayern Munich’s presence, engagement and investment in the market,” she added.
She also emphasized that those who perform well will receive real consideration.

“The most important thing for us is authenticity: We always have a real FC Bayern employee on site. This means that participants are truly observed and evaluated and have a real opportunity to become part of the FC Bayern ecosystem.”

Leipzig ready to seize opportunity
David Wagner, RB Leipzig’s director of youth development, believes the project is a perfect fit for a club known for its active approach to identifying and developing young talent.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Wagner believes the timing is ideal given the club’s strong links with the New York Red Bulls.

“It would be great if we found the next great talent in this game,” Wagner told Bulinews.com in an exclusive interview.
“No one knows if that will be the case, but at least we give ourselves a chance, that’s what life is all about,” the RB Leipzig boss added.
While the 1v1 format emphasizes individual skill and intensity, questions remain about the extent to which it reflects a player’s abilities in a full-team situation. Wagner was interested in this form and wanted to see what would happen.
“I myself will be interested to see what kind of talent we will find. In a tournament like this you find a lot of interesting skills. How those skills fit into the team is also an exciting aspect,” he said.

Even if the selected players only spend a week at Leipzig, Wagner insists the assessment will be thorough.
“After a week with us, we know more or less everything there is to know about a player,” he noted. “We can do a pretty good job of predicting a player’s talent compared to the young players we already have in the building.”

Tyler Adams remains the most successful American rookie transfer from New York Red Bulls to RB Leipzig – He is also the only American to gain a foothold in a Bundesliga club..
Adams joined in January 2019 and has made over 100 appearances for the club and is now a regular at Bournemouth.

“It takes a lot of things to happen for a story like Taylor’s to happen,” said David Wagner. “When you bring in a foreign player, it’s important that everything is super stable and quiet, and Taylor was given a perfect platform at the time,” he explained.
Wagner stressed the importance of RB Leipzig working closely with the New York Red Bulls, with several American players recently traveling to Germany to train.
Moving forward, his focus is on strengthening Leipzig’s path from academy to first-team football.
“That’s one of the things we want to improve on and that’s why I’m sitting in this chair,” said Wagner, who started serving as director of youth development last summer.

“We can’t say we have a good track record in bringing academy players into the first team,” he added. “But we should be looking to the future.”
Due to a crowded first-team squad this season, available spots may be limited – But he expects there will be more room next year. While Leipzig is open to finding its next American star, Wagner stressed that nationality is not a guiding factor.
“Maybe we’ll find the next talent in the U.S. market. But it’s not about passports, it’s about talent.”
