Manchester City have reportedly been encouraged in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as a potential replacement for first-team boss Pep Guardiola.
Speculation over Guardiola’s situation has once again come to the forefront in recent weeks after City’s form dipped slightly and they began to fall behind league leaders Arsenal. But Sunday’s thrilling 2-1 comeback against Liverpool at Anfield revived the Blues’ hopes in the title race.

Executives at the Etihad Stadium are understood to be preparing for an eventual exit from Guardiola, with the 55-year-old entering the final 18 months of his contract and a growing belief within the club that a renewal beyond 2027 is highly unlikely.
The Manchester City boss is understood to have drawn up an early three-man shortlist to replace Pep Guardiola, although the Catalan has repeatedly stressed in recent press conferences that he is more determined than ever to rebuild the team and return to title glory.
Interestingly, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Guardiola’s decision to play out the final year of his Manchester City contract could hinge on whether the Blues win any trophies this season.
In addition, PSG coach Luis Enrique has also been mentioned as a potential replacement for Guardiola, who is expected to make a decision on the final year of his contract at the end of this season or after the end of the season.

Enrique is high on the list of potential replacements for Guardiola due to his previous success and experience. The 55-year-old, like Guardiola, began his coaching career at Barcelona B before moving on to spells at Roma and Celta Vigo.
In 2014, two years after Guardiola left Catalonia, he became Barcelona coach and achieved great success at Camp Nou. Enrique played 181 games for Barcelona on the coaching bench, with a winning rate of 76.24% and scoring a whopping 519 goals.
In his three years as Barcelona coach, Enrique won two La Liga titles and one UEFA Champions League title. After leaving Barcelona, he took a break from management and went on to serve as Spain coach twice – both times taking a leave of absence for personal reasons.
Before he stepped down, he had an unspectacular but solid stewardship of the Spanish national team, which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2021 and the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Spaniard is currently coaching Paris Saint-Germain, where he has managed to revolutionize the club during his three years in charge. Enrique has rebuilt PSG’s previously superstar-dominated squad and created a group of young, mostly French-born players who are willing to work hard.
He has achieved great things, winning the domestic treble in 2023-24 and the continental treble last season, lifting the Champions League for PSG in the process. It’s because of this success that O’Rourke believes Enrique could be a successful candidate to replace Guardiola.
“Look, it’s a very tough job,” O’Rourke said on the Transfer Insider podcast. “Given the success Guardiola has had at the Etihad, he will be a difficult one to follow. City will be looking for an elite coach to replace an elite coach. If you maybe don’t think about that, as City they have to keep a close eye on someone like Luis Enrique.
“Obviously he followed Pep Guardiola at Barcelona, could he follow him at Manchester City? Again he’s an elite manager, he’s done it there, won everything, worked with big names. If he doesn’t agree to a new contract at PSG, then he could be another one who could be considered.

“Manchester City need to find a top coach to replace Guardiola because if Guardiola ends up leaving the club, there will definitely be a huge void.”
Enrique’s contract in Paris expires in the summer of 2027, but the Blues are reportedly also facing competition from Manchester United if they want him to replace Guardiola. However, Michael Carrick’s success in his first four games in charge at Old Trafford may cool the Red Devils’ interest.
