Manchester City currently have 19 players on loan in England and Europe this season. These players include young players who are learning to play professional football, as well as players who have made solid contributions to City’s recent success but need a fresh start to revive their careers.
Here’s how the high-profile players City have loaned out this season have fared as we near the halfway mark of the campaign.

Jack Grealish
Grealish has enjoyed a promising start to the season at Everton as he looks to revive a career that stalled at Manchester City under David Moyes. The England international started the season well but his form has dipped recently. Jack Grealish is unlikely to return to Manchester City but he hopes to impress in the second half of the season to make England’s World Cup squad and secure a permanent move to Everton next summer.

Manuel Akanji
As Manchester City enters the 25/26 season, Manuel Akanji, who has a large number of central defenders, is on loan to Inter Milan this season. The Swiss international has become a mainstay in Inter Milan’s defense this season. Akanji has performed well in Serie A and the Champions League this season and is expected to move to Inter Milan permanently after the season.

Vito Reis
Despite Girona’s poor form this season, Vito Reis has proven he can be the future of Manchester City’s La Liga defense. If not, Reis is one of the best young centre-backs in Spain’s top flight this season. Playing regularly in Girona allowed him to grow as a player and adapt to the physical conditions of playing in Europe. Vito Reis has a bright future at Manchester City based on his performances at struggling Girona this season.

Claudio Echeverri
The idea of Claudio Echeverri playing for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and Champions League makes sense on paper. The reality is very different. Echeverri’s time in Germany was spent on the fringes of Bayer Leverkusen. He has made little impact in Germany and his loan spell will be cut short. He will move to Girona for the second half of the season and hope he can salvage something from what has been a disappointing season for a player with so much talent and potential.

jumaba
The young centre-back has joined Nice on loan this season. Juma Ba has become the mainstay of Nice’s defense. His power in the air and in challenges has been impressive this season. Ba’s ball-handling ability has been improving, which is a good sign. Ba’s performance has been inconsistent at times, which is to be expected from a player so young. But he is continuing to develop and showing promising signs that he can become a quality center back in time.

Max Alleyne
After renewing his contract with Manchester City, Max Alleyne was loaned to the English Championship team Watford to spend this season. At times, Alleyne’s ball-handling ability, defensive talent and acumen will draw attention. He has also been absent from the Watford first team on several occasions. But most importantly, Alleyne has shown that he should have a good career as a centre-back. If Alleyne can continue to develop as a player in the second half of the season, he will have a productive time on loan away from Manchester City.

Svere Nipan
After joining Manchester City this summer, Svernipan was loaned to Middlesbrough. The idea is that Nipan can learn the English game in the heat of competition. There are signs that Nipan has incredible talents. He has all the attributes needed to develop into a quality midfielder in time. Nipan showed flashes of brilliance rather than consistent performance against Middlesbrough.
Nipan was mainly used as a substitute at Middlesbrough. This is not a major cause for concern as this season has been a learning experience for Nypan. There is hope that Nipan will get more game time in the second half of the season, but he is learning the meaning of the English game, which is what he needs at his age.

Jamai Simpson-Poussey
Simpson Pusey looked ready to take the next step in his career when he left Manchester City to join Scottish side Celtic on loan. That hasn’t happened yet. Simpson Pusey has made just one appearance for Celtic’s first team this season. His other appearance was for the Celtic reserves. After coming to the Celtics, the young guard was injured and his season never recovered. The young centre-back has barely featured in a game and is yet to achieve the desired results in Scotland so far. The Celtics’ issues this season haven’t helped Simpson Pusey’s cause, but the young defender has been disappointing so far this season.

Dewan Mbama
The next step in Dewan Mbama’s development was a season-long loan spell at Stoke City in the Championship. The young striker has started the season strongly, scoring two goals in his first two games in the Championship. After an impressive start, Mbama’s goals have dried up. He scored an impressive hat-trick in Stoke City’s 5-1 win over Bristol City in early November. Unfortunately, Mbama has not scored since that game and is learning what it takes to play in the Championship and as a professional in England. The hope is that Mbama will get back in goal soon as he has obvious talent, but I don’t think he will become a first-team player for City.
