One Reddit user rushed to help an elderly neighbor after his harsh Homeowners Association (HOA) chopped off his flowers.
When it comes to growing a garden, HOAs can sometimes be the enemy. Many people insist on a regular lawn, limit planters and planters, or prohibit certain plants and other yard features.
In extreme cases, HOAs sometimes even come onto a homeowner’s property to make changes. According to this Reddit user, this is what happened in their Texas community.
“My elderly neighbor has a lovely patch of bluebonnets in his yard that he and our community love and nurture,” the user told r/texas. “My neighbor is 76 years old, lives alone, has no pets, and still works 9 to 5 for the city’s water supply. He is a kind old man.”
Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas, so it’s no surprise that neighbors love seeing them. “Some of us even took professional photos with them!” said a Reddit user.
However, the HOA sees things differently.
“Our HOA told him it was a violation of the rules to have too many weeds and just cut them down haphazardly,” the Reddit user said. “He stayed in the truck for an hour and almost cried because he loved the flowers.”
The user then took to Reddit for advice. “Is there anything we can do about it? I don’t think so because the HOA overlords rule everything without oversight.”
In many areas, homeowners can work with local Audubon societies to provide protection for native plants in their yards. Some states also have laws that allow homeowners to plant native flowers or anything else they want.
In this case, Texas users could not agree on the legal basis for challenging the HOA. Instead, they recommend uniting neighborhoods and local news.
“This is horrible,” one user said. “Does your community have a Facebook page? I would start there and call them out.”
Another commenter said: “Have a reporter cover the HOA and its excessive powers.”
Several users suggested running for the HOA board, but the original poster wasn’t confident they could make it work. “I actually did this a while ago for different reasons, but unfortunately it turned into a popularity contest and I lost to a very social butterfly in our community,” they said in an edit to the post.
