No. 3 Texas beats Houston Christian, 16-3

The third-ranked Texas Longhorns remain undefeated in the 2026 season and all-time series with a 16-3 win over the Houston Christian Huskies on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, giving head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s team its third consecutive midweek run-rule win.

Freshman right-hander Sam Cozart got his second career start for the Longhorns, hitting a home run in the fourth inning, but was otherwise dominant despite some command issues against the Huskies. Because Cozart doesn’t typically pitch to contact, he allowed 73 pitches in five innings, during which the 6-foot-6, 260-pounder struck out six batters, gave up no four balls and allowed no hits other than a home run.

As Cozart departed, sophomore right-hander Jason Flores came out of the bullpen and was greeted with a double on the right field lime, continuing a trend of hitters taking tall outside cuts into the opposite field against Flores.

On a Texas substitution, junior first baseman Casey Borba was unable to get the ball off his bat handle, allowing runners on second and third with no outs. After Flores got one out, he scored again on a wild pitch when another batter hit a single that hit Borba over the head. When Borba was able to handle a routine grounder at first, Flores fought back, struck out the next batter, and exited the inning without any further damage.

Flores knocked out Houston Christian in the seventh inning.

Texas scored one run in the first inning on an RBI grounder, an RBI single in the second inning from junior catcher Andrew Elmis, and then put the game away in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and four-run singles, including three with two outs. The Horns had eight hits, six singles and two doubles in the game and drove in five runs when the Huskies finally won a long battle with junior first baseman Casey Borba.

In the fifth inning, Texas continued with three singles, leading off with an RBI single to second baseman Ethan Mendoza. Junior catcher Carson Tinney added some life to the game with a three-run homer out of the bullpen in left field to make it 12-1. By Tinney’s power standards, traveling a distance of 355 feet was a paltry effort.
