The Cleveland Guardians didn’t add much talent in free agency this offseason. The roster is essentially the same as a year ago.

However, there are still plenty of free agents the Guardians could pursue as spring approaches. While they may not be the best choice, there are some interesting names available.

The Guardians may have just made a major addition, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Messer reported that former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins was in the Guardians clubhouse. More than just a simple visit, he was wearing Guardian gear.

Guardians appear to have signed Rhys Hoskins in surprising club appearance

“Rhys Hoskins was in the Guardians’ clubhouse. He was wearing Guardians gear, too. It wasn’t just a random visit,” Messer reported.

While not officially signed, it’s a strong indication that Hoskins will join the Guardians this spring.

A free agent showing up to the Guardians clubhouse wearing Guardians gear is a sign that he is actually signed to the team. But nothing has been announced yet. If he does join the team, the Guardians would have a very interesting addition to their roster.

Hoskins is a first baseman who can step into the starting lineup right away, either as a designated hitter or first baseman. But Kyle Manzado isn’t going anywhere, and with CJ Kafus at designated hitter, the roster will look a little different if Hoskins signs.

The 32-year-old slugger hit 148 homers in six seasons with the Phillies, including 34 in the 2018 season. He also led the majors in walks in 2019 and is a career .820 OPS hitter.

Last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, Hoskins hit .237 with a .748 OPS with 12 home runs and 0.9 bWAR in 90 games. He’s not as good as he once was, but Hoskins is still a solid power hitter worth investing in.

It’s a fascinating situation as nothing is official yet, but Messer’s report from the Guardians suggests Hoskins will join the Guardians this spring. If this signing does happen, it would be an interesting addition for Cleveland heading into the spring.
