If you’ve been following me over the past few weeks – this is pretty much what I expected from the committee. They want Bama to make the playoffs because of the whole SEC thing. That way, if Bama loses to Georgia, they can swap the two teams again. This swap would also address the ridiculous doubleheader pairings currently happening, Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M and Oklahoma vs. Alabama.

The CFP president said idle teams can definitely be moved after the conference championship game, so some say it’s still possible that Miami could pass Notre Dame with BYU losing to Texas Tech…but that would be a pretty bad visual (no matter which side of the argument you’re on).

To be clear, if BYU wins the Big 12 Championship game against Texas Tech, Notre Dame is out. If Texas Tech wins, Notre Dame will likely play. No matter what happens against Georgia, Alabama is IN, as is Oklahoma State, which has an extremely bad offense. It’s politics and positioning, and no matter what anyone outside Notre Dame’s bubble thinks, it’s not the Irish who control these things — it’s someone else.

While Notre Dame’s playoff berth remains highly precarious, the Irish are viewed as one of the best teams in college football and possibly one of the most dangerous. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Notre Dame has the fourth-best odds to win the national championship at +1,000, behind only Ohio State (+185), Indiana (+370) and Georgia (+750).
