Colorado basketball defeats California Baptist, makes program history

On Monday night at the CU Events Center, two undefeated teams squared off in what appeared to be an NCAA tournament game.

Buffalo defeated 7-0 Cal Baptist 78-70 to improve to 8-0 on the season. This is the first time in 76 years (since the 1949-50 season) that the team has started a season with eight consecutive wins.

Star freshman quarterback Isaiah Johnson scored 17 points and hit nine of 11 free throws. He is one of four players to score in double figures, joining Johnson, Sebastian Rancic, Barrington Hargreese and Aaron Micheli. Bangot Dak stabilized Colorado’s defense, grabbing 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

It wasn’t the most potent offensive night for a Colorado team that averaged over 90 points per game, as they only scored 78 points. The Lancers built an impressive 14-point lead in the first half, but the Hornets tied it two plays after halftime. Colorado went on a 16-0 run in the second half to help them win their eighth game.

Ted Boyle’s team will now embark on its first true road game of the season, taking on in-state rival Colorado State on Saturday, which should be a solid litmus test for the undefeated Buffs.
