Ross Douthat Warns Conservatives Will Bear the Brunt of Trump’s Failings

new york times columnist Ross Douthat posted a new interesting times Wednesday’s episode, debating the president Donald Trump “Losing the country” just one year into his second term shows who will suffer the most from Trump’s “failed” leadership.

“I want to tell you a secret. A secret that most conservatives on the internet don’t want you to know. One year into Donald Trump’s second term as president, he has lost the country,” Douthat begins in the video, before playing highlights from pundits’ polls of Trump:

“A majority of voters believe the country is in worse shape today than a year ago.” “Approval, at 37 percent, is the lowest of his second term.” “Failure. Failure, failure, failure.” The grand coalition he rallied to defeat Kamala Harris has evaporated.

“All of this was predictable. From the first days of the Governor’s administration to the crushing defeat in Minneapolis, the Trump administration has governed as if swing voters were not in its league. And now, guess what? They are not,” he continued, adding:

But here’s the thing. When the Trump administration became unpopular, it wasn’t moderates and swing voters who lost. It’s the person on the right. People like me, and certainly people to my right, support many of the things the Trump administration is trying to do, from securing the border, to pressuring U.S. institutions to be more ideologically diverse, to resetting and rolling back DEI. All of this, all of this agenda will go away if the Republicans don’t win the election.

Douthat sounded the alarm about the long-term political prospects of Republicans, as many polls show Democrats have an advantage in the midterm elections — at least when it comes to regaining the House majority. With the odds stacked in favor of Republicans, winning a Senate majority for Democrats still appears to be a very heavy burden.
