YouTube Gold: Duke-UNC In The 1960 ACC Tournament

Today’s video offers some great old footage from the Duke-UNC Championship game in 1960. The same goes for color. Of course, the game was still being played at Reno Stadium at the time, which explains the red floor.

This was Duke’s first year under Vic Bubas, the coach who really turned Duke into a national power. Frank McGwire still coaches the Tar Heels, while Everett Keys lingers on the sidelines at NC State.

Bubas found success quickly at Duke. In his first season, the Blue Devils finished fourth (17-11/7-7) and defeated South Carolina, North Carolina and Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament to capture Duke’s first ACC championship.

The team advanced to the Elite Eight after defeating Princeton and St. Joseph’s before losing to New York University.

Duke won this game 71-69. Tensions have reached a different level, though: Art Hyman committed to UNC as a freshman at Durham, but things didn’t go well. During the freshman game, Hyman took a few punches and ended up with stitches. When the two teams met in Durham in February, tensions were high and a legendary brawl broke out at the end of the game.

Since then, the rivalry has been at a high level.
