College football began in 1869 and has a long and sometimes checkered history. The NCAA was actually founded in 1906 because the game of football had become too violent to remain unmonitored and regulated.
Over time, it evolved into the sport we know today. In 1895, during a game between Georgia and the University of North Carolina, the forward pass was introduced into the game, and unsurprisingly, North Carolina cheated as the play was still illegal.

It was legalized in 1906, the same year the NCAA was founded.
In this video from 1929, Army and Notre Dame are playing, and you can really feel how much has changed and how much has stayed the same.
Just out of interest, look at the guy who chose not to wear a helmet. Apparently it was optional back then.
Regardless, it’s still interesting to take a look at an early version of the game. If you’ve never seen it, the movie Leatherheads does a great job of showing this era and how open gaming was. Very interesting.
By the way, just to give some context, this film was shot shortly after the stock market crash on October 24, 1929. The competition takes place on November 28th. No one knew how bad things would get, but at least they lost themselves in old-fashioned football at Donnybrook.
