DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran discussed new video games based on the DC Universe with Warner Bros. game studios Rocksteady and NetherRealm. The two studio heads spoke with the developer about the characters and stories in the DC games and how they align with the larger plans for the DCU film and multimedia franchises. Gunn also confirmed that the first DCU video game is at least “a few years” away from launch.
New DCU game still ‘years’ away
The two executives spoke to the media at a DC Studios event and shared the latest updates on the new DC Universe video games. “We’re working very closely with JB Perrette, who’s running the division, which is really a first for Warner Bros.,” Safran said at the event (via IGN ). Perrette leads Warner Bros.’ global streaming and gaming divisions.
“James and I sit down with the heads of JB’s studios, whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady, and sit down with them and talk about the characters and stories that interest us and that interest them,” Safran added.
Gunn said he and Safran saw early designs for the development project at Game Studios and discussed the story and characters. “When they talk about what the story might be, we say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this route because we have plans to maybe do some things with this character and so on,’ and help figure that out,” Gunn said.
The DC Studios head also confirmed that a new DCU video game is at least two years away from release, with Safran saying the upcoming project is “very interesting.”
A few weeks ago, Bloomberg reported that Rocksteady Studios was developing a single-player Batman game, and two DC studio heads broke the news. The report quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that the new version of “Batman” is still several years away from release. However, it’s unclear whether Rocksteady’s next game will be part of the Batman: Arkham series or a reboot in the new DC Universe.
Additionally, WB Games’ Monolith Productions is reportedly also working on a new Wonder Woman game. The game has reportedly been in development for years and is being relaunched in 2024, still years away from release.
