Many of the New York Yankees’ key players are on long-term contracts.

However, the other side of the coin is Jazz Chisholm Jr. The 2026 MLB season is the final year of his contract.
The Yankees will re-sign him soon. They could try to re-sign him after the season. They could consider trading him before the deadline. Or they could let him leave in free agency after this campaign.
All options are on the table.

The Yankees have a complicated history here, too, so there isn’t a simple precedent to draw from.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com tried to explain it in a new article Thursday.

“Historically, the Yankees haven’t been big on extensions, letting players hit free agency and then re-signing them at that point if they want to bring them back,” Feinsand wrote. “But there are exceptions — Aaron Hicks, Luis Severino and Brett Gardner all signed extensions during their tenures with the Yankees — so the idea of the Yankees trying to extend Chisholm isn’t a stretch. A lot may depend on how the team views Anthony Volpe’s future, as top shortstop George Lombard Jr. gets closer to the majors, which could prompt Volpe to move to second base if the team still believes in him.”

Some Yankees fans are very confused by the idea of not re-signing Chisholm.
Chisholm has been a power-speed monster in the Bronx since the Yankees acquired him from the Miami Marlins before the 2024 trade deadline.

He’s dealt with some injuries and has been a bit inconsistent, but at his best, Chisholm is a superstar.
That likely depends on how much Chisholm wants to spend on the deal. But if a fair contract can be reached, Yankees fans will definitely want him to stay.
