The Pittsburgh Steelers are still searching for a head coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down on January 13.

Pittsburgh began its search by interviewing numerous candidates around the league, but apparently the team is also interested in a certain college coach.

The Steelers are “very interested” in Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal, according to NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger.

“I’m not trying to play reporter or anything boring, but I heard the Steelers are very interested in University of Miami coach Mario Cristobal,” Baldinger said on the Best Football Show podcast. “I think Mario Cristobal is actually going to really fit into the NFL. I watched him practice in the spring. The way Mario coaches the team reminds me of what old-school coaches used to do.”

Cristobal has been Miami’s head coach since 2022, leading the team to a 35-19 record in four years and a berth in the 2025 national championship game.

The 55-year-old Cristobal also previously served as the head coach of Florida International and Oregon, so Cristobal has very rich experience in the college team.

It’s hard to imagine Cristobal leaving Miami after leading the school to its best season in more than a decade, but if the Steelers offer him the job, it could be something that would appeal to him.

Pittsburgh likely wants a proven leader as its head coach, and Cristobal fits that description despite not having any NFL experience.
