Woman, accused of vandalizing transgender-related books, turns herself in on Christmas Eve

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – A 71-year-old woman turned herself in to police on Christmas Eve after allegedly destroying transgender-related books at the Mesa County Central Library.

On the afternoon of Dec. 17, camera footage showed Marty Mykytiuk throwing transgender-themed books into a library trash can, according to law enforcement. Mesa County Crime Stoppers said when library staff recovered the books, they discovered several pages had been torn out and discarded.

Library officials said the titles include “When Harry Became Sally,” “Love and Resistance,” “Trans Teens” and “Beyond Trans Gender Issues.”

The Grand Junction Police Department told WesternSlopeNow that Mykytiuk was issued a citation for criminal mischief.

“We respect that individuals may have different opinions, but damaging library property deprives others of access and is a violation of our Code of Conduct,” a Mesa County Library spokesperson said in a statement.
