A series of cross-country storms will spread winter weather into the central and northeastern United States through the rest of the week, with snow, ice and heavy rain expected.
On Jan. 6, the National Weather Service said cold weather will spread from the Great Lakes region up into New England, the latest round of ice, snow and precipitation following similar weather in recent days.
Starting on January 6, ice and snow showers will continue into midweek from the upper Great Lakes into upstate New York and central New England, the weather service said. Millions of Americans are under winter weather warnings in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and New England.
Next, a “larger and more damaging” storm will bring heavy rain, thunderstorms and snow from the Plains to the east later this week, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Storm brings cold weather, icy weather
The weather service said up to 0.1 to 0.2 inches of freezing rain accumulating on the ground could cause slick driving conditions from the upper Great Lakes into upstate New York and central New England and coastal Maine. Along with the wintry weather, snow showers are possible in the Northeast and will continue into mid-week.
Snowfall will be highest in the inland mountains of New England, but smaller amounts will continue through January 7 in this region, according to the weather service. Precipitation totals could range from 1 to 6 inches, AccuWeather reported.
“Snow, sleet and freezing rain will impact travel from Minnesota to New England midweek,” AccuWeather said.
The national weather forecast map for Tuesday, January 6, shows an outbreak of freezing rain across the upper Great Lakes and Northeast.
Second round of stormy weather to affect dozens of states
A powerful storm from the west of the country will move east later this week, bringing rain, thunderstorms and snow to dozens of states, AccuWeather reports. It will spread from Texas to the Great Lakes on January 8-9.
A second storm system will bring cold weather to the Plains and Midwest, with the potential for severe thunderstorms in the Ozarks and Mississippi Valley, according to AccuWeather. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys said severe thunderstorms are possible later this week from Texas and Oklahoma to Tennessee and Kentucky, bringing hail and damaging winds.
“This coast-to-coast storm is expected to bring snow or a mix of cold weather from parts of Arizona and New Mexico across the Great Lakes and into northern New England,” Royce said, adding that travelers should prepare for slippery and hazardous road conditions.
