Winter Olympics 2026: Mia Manganello races to bronze with final push in mass start

MILAN — Mia Manganello narrowly missed the 2010 Olympics. Eight years later, she won a bronze medal in PyeongChang. In her final Olympic race, she again won a bronze medal.

The women’s mass start is the most chaotic and unpredictable event in speed skating.

Manganeiro is one of the few speed skaters in the United States who started out in inline skating before taking to the ice. But after failing to qualify for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Manganello hung up his skates, jumped on his bike and became a professional cyclist.

She returned to skating in 2016 and won a bronze medal in the team pursuit heading into the 2018 Olympics. Four years ago in Beijing, she finished fourth in the mass start – missing out on the podium by just over a second.

The 36-year-old won her first individual medal on Saturday in the final game of her Olympic career.
