The LSU women’s basketball team’s dominance has been the team’s defining characteristic during head coach Kim Mulkey’s tenure in Baton Rouge. They are now 12-0, coming off a 91-33 win over Morgan State on Tuesday.
Despite the Tigers’ 12-0 start, they are ranked fifth in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll. Their ranking remains stable so far this season, as they started the year in the same position they are now.

The reason for their inability to advance is that the team’s schedule is relatively easy. Their most difficult opponent so far is Duke University, which is 4-6. According to “Sports Reference”, as of now, the Tigers’ schedule strength ranks 315th out of 363 teams.

The good news is that they performed just about right against these lower-level opponents. Their offensive rating of 135.0 ranks first in the country, and their defensive rating is not far behind at second.
Either way, they’ll soon have a chance to prove why they deserve a higher ranking. LSU opens its SEC schedule against Kentucky on New Year’s Day, and the rivalry will only intensify from there, with two games against No. 2 Texas, one against No. 8 Oklahoma State and one against No. 3 South Carolina. This stretch will determine their position in the coaches’ poll, but more importantly, their playoff seeding.
