Mascherano’s shock departure on Tuesday came just four months after leading the club to its first MLS Cup title.
However, Miami opened a new era under Hoyos with a stunning win over Colorado.
Messi, who currently leads the Herons’ scoring charts, made the breakthrough with a penalty kick in the 13th minute.
The home team dominated possession but failed to create many clear-cut chances.
Miami doubled their advantage before halftime when German Beltrame headed home from close range.
But Colorado struck back early in the second half and Rafael Navarro worked his magic to close the gap.

Coach Matt Wells then took Darren Yapi off the bench and the forward made an immediate impact.
After an assist from Lucas Herrington, Yapi fired a brilliant shot past the goalkeeper.
However, Messi struck a brilliant winner 10 minutes before the end of the game.
The Argentinian dribbled the ball into the penalty area and slid a shot into the back post.
The game ended on a sour note when Yannick Bright was sent off for using vulgar and abusive language towards the referee late in the game.
Miami resumes action on Wednesday when they take on Real Salt Lake on the road.
