Where do people move to in Oklahoma?

The Sooner State has seen significant population growth since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, with some counties in particular seeing large increases in residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Eight counties will gain more than 1,000 residents between 2024 and 2025 alone, and five will lose 100 or more residents during that period. However, most counties in the state saw little change.

The counties with the fastest population growth are either the major cities of Oklahoma City and Tulsa or the neighboring Canadian and Rogers counties. Canadian County, home to Edmond, Yukon, Mustang, El Reno and more, is the fastest growing county in the state, followed by Tulsa County.

Is Oklahoma shrinking or growing?

The Sooner State’s population increased by 163,934 people between 2020 and 2025, including natural change and net migration.

According to the U.S. Census, nearly 160,000 people have moved to Oklahoma since the outbreak began: 107,244 domestic and 51,694 international.

A study by StorageCafe shows that Oklahoma’s new residents are primarily made up of Millennials born between 1981 and 1996, and this proportion will reach 27% by 2023. Texas appears to be the state’s largest source of new residents.

According to the U.S. Census, Oklahoma has gained 25,530 residents from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025.

These are the counties losing the largest proportion of their population, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.

  2. Vernon Parish, Louisiana: -2.1%

  3. Del Norte County, California: -2%

  4. Monroe County, Florida: -2%

  5. Tuolumne County, California: -1.9%

  6. Washington County, Mississippi: -1.9%

  7. Christian County, Kentucky: -1.8%

  8. LeFlore County, Mississippi: -1.8%

  9. Lassen County, California: -1.7%

  10. Curry County, New Mexico: -1.5%
