Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the March full moon – a natural sign that winter is coming to an end. This year, March’s full moon is especially important.
Tuesday’s March full moon, known as the Worm Moon, coincides with a total lunar eclipse, often called a blood moon, when the moon takes on a dramatic reddish hue.

What do total lunar eclipses look like around the world?
The total lunar eclipse is expected to be visible in the United States, Asia, Australia, and Central and South America, according to NASA.

When can we see the total lunar eclipse?
According to NASA, the total lunar eclipse will occur in the early morning hours of March 3, 2026.
According to NASA, peak viewing occurs during the eclipse’s peak, when the moon turns its deepest red. The Blood Moon coincides with March’s Full Worm Moon.
What happens during a total lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, casting a huge shadow on the moon’s surface.
According to NASA, this alignment can only occur during a full moon.
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon completely enters the Earth’s shadow, causing it to appear red or orange.
Why is it called a blood moon?
NASA explains that during a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks most of the sun’s light from reaching the moon.
The remaining light that reaches the moon is filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters shorter wavelengths and allows red and orange hues to pass through.

The effect is often described as looking like all of Earth’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon – creating a dramatic “blood moon” appearance.
Why is it called the Worm Moon?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which began publishing full moon names in the 1930s, explains that March’s full moon is called the Worm Moon because earthworms begin to reappear as the ground thaws in late winter.
NASA added that some Native American tribes used the name to describe the worm’s excrement – small mounds of soil – that appear as the frozen ground begins to soften.

Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas shared on “Good Morning America” that this year’s Worm Moon eclipse occurs in Virgo, an earth sign associated with productivity, organization and health.
“Virgo is a practical, down-to-earth, efficient sign, and that’s an important issue we have to deal with,” Thomas explains. “Simplifying our plans, schedules and routines will help us make greater progress and reach our desired goals faster. Making positive changes around diet, fitness and health now will also yield great results.”
He added that this lunar eclipse is an especially powerful time to evaluate your daily life as it relates to diet, fitness and overall health.
Rituals and Performances to Try During the Worm Moon
Full moons have long been viewed across cultures as a time of heightened energy, reflection and change. However, since this Worm Moon coincides with a lunar eclipse, Thomas said it’s not an ideal time for traditional manifestation rituals.
“A lot has changed on a collective level,” he explains. “Instead, it’s best to lay low, reflect, and pay attention to what the universe is trying to tell you about the new path you’re on.”
Thomas recommends rest, meditation and self-care, noting that people may experience heightened emotions, adrenaline rush and exhaustion during the eclipse.
