Wareham stars as Renegades keep title defence alive

Georgia Wareham performed well across the board as the Melbourne Renegades retained their WBBL title defense with a six-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers.

The Australia international took 3-21 as the Sixers were restricted to 130-9 before scoring an unbeaten 49 runs (29 balls) to end a successful chase off 22 balls.

The result moves the Renegades into the top four, level on 10 points with fifth-placed Perth Scorchers but with a higher net run rate.

However, they have played all 10 of their group stage games, with Perth Scorchers having one game remaining and eight-point Adelaide Strikers with two games remaining, leaving the Rebels’ knockout fate out of their control.

Ellis Perry (65 off 47) and Ash Gardner (16 off 14) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as the Sixers struggled to forge meaningful partnerships.

Wareham dismissed Alyssa Healy for a duck in the fifth over, before removing Maddie Villiers and Emma Manix-Jeeves with three balls and two, while England’s Alice Kapusi took 2-27.

Chasing 131 points, the Renegades fell to 4-2 and then 49-4 before Wareham combined with Courtney Webb (33 off 21) to give them an easy victory.
