Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced that 2026 will be Ethereum Recovering lost ground on self-sovereignty and distrust, calling for an end to every compromise the web makes in pursuit of mainstream adoption.
In a lengthy post on Friday
“2026 is the year we regain lost ground on autonomy and trustlessness,” Buterin wrote.
The manifesto marks Ethereum’s sharpest turn yet, away from convenience-driven design choices that dilute its core value, framing this moment as a moment for the network’s long-term legitimacy and presence in its expanding role in global infrastructure.
Buterin’s plan focuses on making full-node operations practical again through a zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine and block access restrictions, reversing years of growing hardware requirements that have driven verification on personal computers.
“Full Nodes: With ZK-EVM and BAL, running a node locally and validating the Ethereum chain on your own computer will become easier again,“he said.
The roadmap also prioritizes Helios as “Actually verify the data you receive from RPC instead of blindly trusting it,” as well as inadvertent RAM and private information retrieval protocols that enable users to “Requesting data from RPC without revealing the data you are requesting allows you to access dapps without having to sell your access patterns to dozens of third parties around the world.“
Social recovery wallet with time lock will provide “If you misplace your mnemonic phrase, or an online or offline attacker extracts your mnemonic phrase, the wallet won’t let you lose all your money or get all your money backdoored by Google.“
Privacy features will be integrated directly into the wallet interface to “Make private payments from your wallet with the same user experience as public payments.“
APIs will move to on-chain hosting via IPFS to avoid “Relying on trusted servers, if they go offline, these servers will lock your assets with no real recovery, and if they are hacked, even for a millisecond, give you a hijacked user interface that steals your funds.“
Buterin warned: “Over the past decade we have seen Ethereum regress severely,“Node continues”From easy to difficult“And the transformation of dapps”From static pages to complex behemoths that leak all data to a dozen servers.“
