Viral Jersey Shore boardwalk fight with off-duty police leads to indictment of N.J. man

A South Jersey man faces three indictments after he was charged in a fight with two off-duty police officers on the Atlantic City boardwalk last summer, according to state court records.

The grand jury indicted Xontae Glass, 27, of Mamora on Feb. 19, about six months after he was accused of getting into a fight with an Atlantic City police officer.

Glass was charged with aggravated assault and weapons charges, according to an indictment reviewed by NJ.com.

After Glass was arrested, a judge approved his release during an August detention hearing, records show.

The altercation occurred during the Seedorf/McMeekin Memorial 5K Run, where two Atlantic County police officers — James Herbert of Atlantic City and Scott Pollack of Northfield — were competing. A bystander captured the encounter and the video was later shared widely on social media.

The viral confrontation began after Herbert spotted Glass and his wife fighting on the beach. Atlantic City police previously said Glass allegedly put her in a headlock and appeared to drag her under the boardwalk.

The police chiefs of Northfield and Atlantic City praised officers for helping the woman.

However, the woman criticized the officers in an interview with Philadelphia’s 6ABC, saying they did not identify themselves as police officers.

Police said seeing the woman in danger, Herbert intervened, prompting Glass to begin fighting with the off-duty officer. During the fight, Glass threatened Herbert with a knife, according to police.

Moments later, police said, Pollack saw the fight, grabbed his service gun, approached Glass and ordered him to drop the knife.

Video shows two men fighting in front of several storefronts on the boardwalk. It appears to show Herbert punching Glass, causing him to briefly fall to the ground. The woman was seen trying to separate them.

After the fight, Glass fled the boardwalk but was arrested with the help of witnesses who directed police to him. Glass became combative as he was being taken to the jail, injuring an Atlantic City police officer, police said.

No future court appearances have been scheduled in the case, and court records do not indicate Glass has an attorney.
