Huntsville Police Officer recognized for courageous floodwater rescue of hypothermic man

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A Huntsville police officer is being honored for her heroic actions when she waded into waist-deep floodwaters to rescue a hypothermic man.

On Friday, December 5, a community member contacted Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles directly to explain the impact of Officer Miller’s life-threatening situation on Millvale Drive.

HPD tells News 19 that without hesitation, Officers Miller and Morris entered the icy water and approached the man who was showing obvious signs of hypothermia.

HEMSI reports his core temperature is only 90°F. Authorities said his life could be in danger if his temperature dropped any further.

Department leaders say the officers’ quick thinking and willingness to take risks may have saved the man’s life.

“I just want to recognize one of your officers. Officer Miller assisted my family in the area of Millvale Drive in Huntsville around 7:30 this morning. She was kind, very professional, and very patient. She really needs a hero badge and should be recognized. She is a hero in my book. She saved my brother’s life this morning. She is an asset to this community.”
