Utah girl, mother die in apparent murder-suicide at Las Vegas hotel

A preteen Utah girl and her mother were found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room on Sunday, and authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide, police and community officials said Monday.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers went to a hotel near West Flamingo Road and South Valley View Boulevard on Sunday to conduct a welfare check after the two failed to attend a scheduled cheer competition and could not be contacted, according to police.

When police entered the room, they found two people dead. Preliminary information from investigators suggests the mother shot her daughter and then herself. Police said a note was recovered from the room. Authorities have not released details of its contents.

Utah Xtreme Cheer, a Utah-based competitive cheerleading organization, confirmed Sunday night that one of its athletes has died.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of our sweet athlete Addy,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post. “We are completely heartbroken. There are no words to describe this situation. She was so loved and she will always be a part of the UXC family.”

Earlier on Sunday, the organization released news that the athlete and her mother were missing after they failed to arrive at the event and could not be contacted, and said it had contacted police.

The Utah Fusion All-Stars also identified the deceased athlete’s name as Addy, writing on social media that she was “well-loved in our gym” and “we will always remember the sweet smile and light she brought to the team.”
