After the No. 16 Trojans lost to No. 1 UConn on Saturday night, USC women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb offered her thoughts on the mass shooting at Brown University during her postgame press conference.
Providence police said Sunday morning they had one person in custody after a shooting on campus during the finals that left two people dead and nine injured. This man is in his thirties. The shooting occurred in an engineering building on campus, and people in the area were told to shelter in place for several hours as police searched for the shooter.

Gottlieb, who plays basketball at Brown University, said she checked her phone after the game and saw numerous text messages about the shooting. She said she felt she needed to address the shooting because it was bigger than basketball and “we can all do better.”
“It doesn’t need to be this way,” Gottlieb said. Advertisement
Police said the gunman had a pistol and fired more than 40 rounds during the shooting. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the building’s exterior doors are unlocked, but badges are required to enter classrooms where exams are being administered.

Gottlieb has been USC’s coach since 2021, following two seasons as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers after serving as Cal’s head coach. She played at Brown University from 1995-99 and entered coaching immediately after her college playing career ended.
The Trojans entered the season without injured star JuJu Watkins after USC lost 79-51 at home to UConn on Saturday night. She injured her knee in the 2025 NCAA tournament, a season after USC lost to UConn in the Elite Eight. Watkins will miss the entire 2025-26 season with a torn ACL.
