Tyrese Maxey scores 34 in strong all-around showing as 76ers beat Mavs 123-108

DALLAS (AP) — Tyrese Maxey had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, Joel Embiid scored 22 points and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Dallas Mavericks 123-108 on Thursday night.

Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe, a Baylor product playing 100 miles away from a college campus for the first time, scored 23 points on a 3-pointer in the final seconds of a 139-136 overtime win over Memphis.

Oft-injured Anthony Davis returns to Dallas after missing two games with adductor soreness. The 10-time All-Star finished with 13 points and eight rebounds to help the Mavericks tie their worst season record and lose four straight.

Rookie No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg scored 12 points for the Mavericks, while Max Christie added 18 points.

Former Maverick Quentin Grimes, who was part of another trade made shortly after the infamous Luka Doncic trade for Davis between the Dallas and Los Angeles Lakers last season, had 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

The 76ers led by six when a steal and dunk by Grimes triggered an 11-point fourth quarter in which he hit all 3-pointers and blocked one shot.

Paul George scored 14 points and launched a 17-2 run. Philadelphia led 44-37 in the second quarter.

The Mavericks shot 65% in the first quarter, leading 33-27, and shot 38% the rest of the way. Davis and Flagg combined to hit 11 of 28 shots.

Maxey shot 14-of-24 from the field, combining long-range shooting and deft driving for another stellar performance against his hometown team. Edgecombe made 9 of 14 shots and the 76ers shot 53% from the field.
