president Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Monday, warning that “we’re screwed” if the Supreme Court overturns the tariffs he unilaterally imposed on much of the rest of the world.
“If the Supreme Court rules against the United States on tariffs for any reason, the actual amount we would have to pay back would be in the hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump declared in a post on Truth Social, “and that doesn’t include the amount of ‘payback’ that countries and companies would need to invest in building plants, factories and equipment to avoid paying tariffs.”
“When these investments are added up, we are talking about trillions of dollars! This will be a mess that will be nearly impossible for our country to pay for. Anyone who says it can be done quickly and easily is giving a wrong, inaccurate, or completely misunderstood answer to a very large and complex problem. It may not be possible, but if it is, the dollars will be so large that it will take many years to figure out what numbers we are talking about or even who, when, and where to pay,” he continued. “Remember, when America shines, the world shines. In other words, if the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this national security treasure, we are screwed!”
The court’s ruling on the matter is expected to be announced in the near future, possibly even this Wednesday.
Data released by the U.S. Commerce Department last month showed the economy grew at an impressive 4.3% annualized rate between July and September last year, which Trump later attributed to his trade policies.
“Tariffs are responsible for the U.S. economic data that just came out…and it’s only going to get better!” he argued at the time. “Also, no inflation and good national security. Pray for the US Supreme Court!!!”
The court heard the case in November, which challenged Trump’s authority to impose import taxes without action from Congress. During oral arguments, the Chief Justice John Roberts Some court observers believe the tariffs are a “tax on Americans,” which bodes ill for the administration.
