‘This means everything’: Seahawks’ Ernest Jones revels in Rams defeat

SEATTLE — Sometimes, there’s nothing sweeter than revenge.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones, wide receiver Cooper Kupp and running back Cam Akers got some comeuppance as the Seahawks defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game.

Jones, Kupp and Akers were once teammates with the Rams. They helped the Rams win Super Bowl 56. The three went their separate ways en route to a reunion in Seattle.

The Rams traded Jones to the Tennessee Titans before the 2024 season. He was then traded to Seattle in October 2024.

Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) catches a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The play was initially ruled an incomplete pass but was eventually overturned. Despite TeSlaa’s hard work, the Packers won the game 27-13.

USA TODAY Sports asked Jones about beating his former team for a chance to play in Super Bowl 60.

“Moving was hard for me. My son was just born. We just bought a house in Los Angeles. To completely change our lives and win this game. Trust me, I won’t say it, but it means everything,” Jones said with a smile.

“I’m over the moon right now.”

Jones had a team-high eight tackles in the conference championship game. The middle linebacker led the team in tackles (126) and interceptions (5) during the regular season. He has been one of the Seahawks’ best defensive players since arriving in Seattle.

Jones’ Super Bowl experience, along with that of Kupp and Akers, should benefit the Seahawks as they head to Santa Clara and try to win football’s ultimate game.

“This is everything we talk about. We talked about this in the OTAs. This is everything. I don’t have the words to express how I feel right now,” Jones said. “I’ve been here. I’ve been to the Super Bowl before. See how these guys do it, see what the real job is like, see that. I mean, that’s everything to me.”
