Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) topped a new poll asking Americans to evaluate the job performance of 13 U.S. leaders.
Gallup’s latest survey, conducted from Dec. 1 to Dec. 15, found that 28% of Americans approve of the way Schumer is carrying out his duties.
He was the only one with a number below 30 percent, a score weighed down by a poor approval rating of 39 percent among Democratic respondents. That’s a sharp drop of 37 percentage points from January 2024, when 76% of Democrats approved of Schumer’s job performance, according to Gallup.
The latest Gallup poll reflects the fallout from Schumer’s tumultuous year.
The minority leader was roundly ridiculed by Republicans and condemned by his own party after eight members of the Senate Democratic caucus broke ranks to end the 43-day shutdown without securing an extension of enhanced health care subsidies.
Schumer’s tactical missteps, coupled with his refusal to endorse New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, have led some frustrated Democrats to call for new leadership.
“Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) posted on X. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop Americans’ health insurance premiums from skyrocketing, what will you fight for?”
Gallup found that with the exception of Schumer, not one of 12 U.S. leaders from Congress, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court or the Federal Reserve has majority support.
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell received the highest score with an approval rating of 44%. Following closely are Secretary of State Marco Rubio (41%), Vice President J.D. Vance (39%) and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (39%).
Here’s how other leaders fared in Gallup’s annual final poll:
