A woman in India is lucky to have survived after being attacked by a bear outside her village.
what happened?
The incident took place in Dehradun and forest officials said it was “the first reported bear attack in the area,” The Times of India reported.
Local residents came to help and scared away the bear. The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Bear attacks are uncommon; there are only about 40 each year, according to World Animal Foundation.
However, this number is expected to rise as habitat loss threatens nearly every animal species on Earth.
Why is this attack concerning?
Habitat loss is a major cause of human-wildlife interactions. As forests are cleared for agricultural land and urban development, local animals lose food, water and shelter.
Hungry, desperate animals often venture into human settlements, increasing the risk of interactions.
Interactions range from sightings to attacks. Even sightings and “friendly” encounters can put animals at risk, as animals that have lost their fear of humans are more likely to become aggressive toward food and subsequently be euthanized.
Just last year, a bear in Yellowstone National Park had to be executed after it showed a fear of humans and repeatedly entered a campground to feed.
What measures are being taken to prevent human-wildlife interactions?
Habitat loss increases interactions, while habitat restoration decreases interactions. Restoring natural spaces ensures that plants and animals have the resources they need to survive and thrive.
When recovery is not possible, such as in human cities, incorporating animal-friendly buildings, such as wildlife crossings and green roofs, can also help reduce interactions and keep animals safe.
If you encounter wild animals such as elk, bears, and mountain lions, keep a safe distance of about 100 feet. For their safety and yours, never approach, chase or feed wild animals.
