Tense exchange at women’s day rally in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Video captured by NewsChannel 9 during Sunday’s Women’s Day rally shows a black pickup truck revving its engine and driving away demonstrators who were rallying for women’s rights and democracy.

Our crews were there when the crowd surrounded the vehicle on Hiawatha Avenue. A woman stands in front of a truck outside American Destiny.

While we don’t know what prompted the scene or if the man was provoked, the black pickup truck can be seen revving its engine and sending demonstrators rolling across the road.

As people surrounded him, a woman stood in front of his truck and tried to stop him from leaving.

The driver yelled at her to go away. He then got out of the car and continued yelling. The driver then tried to reverse but pulled forward.

Seconds later, in a close call, he nearly bumped into the woman who was trying to stop him from leaving.

The young man got out of the car again, shouted at the demonstrators, and walked away.

Syracuse police said they found the driver of the pickup nearby — who said he was driving through the area when protesters surrounded his pickup — and hit the car with signs.

Police took a statement from him, but as of this morning, no charges appeared to have been filed.
