‘Strong’ 4.9 earthquake, aftershocks rock Coachella Valley

A series of earthquakes, including one considered severe, shook homes and properties in the Coachella Valley on Monday.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the strongest earthquake occurred at around 5:56 pm on January 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a magnitude of 4.9 and its epicenter about 11 miles north of Indio.

The quake was felt throughout the South, including San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

“Powerful, scary and loud”

Some residents described the 4.9-magnitude quake as “strong” and “powerful,” with university professor and author Ruth Nolan calling the quake “strong, scary, and loud.”

Others told the Daily News the shaking lasted about 15 seconds and was described as “violent shaking” and “rolling” motion that shook the property.

Aftershocks include:

  • At 6:50 p.m., a magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported 10 miles north-northwest of Indio.

  • A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck 12 miles north of Indio at 6:27 p.m.

  • A magnitude 3.3 and 3.4 earthquake struck about 13 miles north of Indio at 5:57 p.m.

There have been no reports of damage in Palm Springs, said Gustavo Araiza, spokesman for the Palm Springs Police Department. Initial reports online did not immediately indicate damage to other cities in the Coachella Valley, The Desert Sun reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred near Fontana, 5 miles southwest of Devoux, at 5:41 pm on Sunday, January 18.

The quake was felt in parts of San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, including local mountain communities.

The earthquake occurred near the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault zones.

Earlier in the day, a magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck the Johannesburg area at 8:24 a.m., and a magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred at 8:21 a.m.
