The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning and winter weather advisory for parts of New York City, New Jersey and Long Island as a fast-moving but powerful system sweeps through the Northeast Friday into early Saturday.
“I can’t even remember the last time a snowstorm got us up to half a foot or more,” Fox 5 New YorkMike Woods said Friday.
Where will it snow?

Southeastern New York, northeastern New Jersey and parts of southern Connecticut, including New York City and Long Island, will be most severely affected, the NWS said.
Winter storm warnings cover areas where the heaviest snowfall is expected, while warnings extend to parts of Connecticut and nearby counties where snowfall amounts could be lighter but still damaging.
When will it snow?
Snow has begun to fall in some areas of the tri-state area, with heaviest precipitation overnight into early Saturday.
A winter storm warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, and a winter weather advisory remains in effect for the surrounding area from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Friday night’s commute will be especially difficult as the snowfall intensifies.
How many inches of snow are expected to fall?
From a numerical perspective
Much of New Jersey and Long Island will likely get 5 to 9 inches of snow, and possibly even 11 inches.
Other areas of New York state near the lower Hudson Valley, including New York City, will see 7 to 11 inches of snow, and possibly up to 12 inches.

The system could mark one of the biggest snowfalls New York City has seen in years. According to the Fox Forecast Center, it has been more than 1,400 days since the city received more than 6 inches of snow in 24 hours.
