After several days of warm weather in Staunton reaching the mid-60s, the Augusta County area could see a mix of rain and snow on Sunday depending on the path of the storm and whether it gets cold enough.
It’s hard to believe that temperatures could hit 68 degrees on Friday and snow could fall on Sunday, but the warm weather will arrive quickly this week and disappear next week, reminding us that winter is far from over in the Shenandoah Valley.
AccuWeather is forecasting a winter storm threat Saturday night through Monday, February 21-23.
The national weather forecast predicts a 50 percent chance of rain early Sunday with highs in the 40s, followed by sleet and sleet in the late afternoon and evening with a low of 27 degrees.
Starting off the coast of British Columbia in the eastern Pacific, the storm will move south through California on Thursday, then across the Rockies on Friday before sweeping across the central states on Saturday, according to AccuWeather forecasts.
AccuWeather Weekend Forecast
“A lot of the pieces of the puzzle have to come together at the right time for a major storm to emerge and bring heavy snow later this weekend into early next week,” AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.
The exact path of the storm will determine how widespread the impact is in the area and whether it will be primarily rain or snow.
