Signal Users Can Now Change Registered Phone Number Without Losing Chat History: Here’s How

Signal has introduced a new feature that allows users to change the phone number registered on the app without losing their chat history. When a user changes their phone number on Signal, all their contacts will receive an in-chat notification mentioning the update. Since all conversations on Signal are end-to-end encrypted, the instant messaging service links chats to the user’s phone number, meaning conversations are not stored and synced in the cloud.

According to a blog post, Signal has now added a new feature to the app on Android and iOS that allows users to change phone numbers without losing chats, groups, and Signal profiles. This new feature will come in handy if users want to change their phone number but want to keep their phone. To use this feature, users need the latest version of the Signal app (at least Android v5.30.6 or iOS v5.27.1).

The support page mentions that the change number feature is not supported if the user is unable to send or receive messages on Signal using an existing registered phone number, the device is misplaced or lost, or the phone is wiped clean.

The support page also mentions how to update the phone number registered on Signal.

  1. Click contour (show picture)> set up (iOS only) > account > Change phone number > continue.

  2. Enter your old phone number in the first field and your new phone number in the second field.

  3. Confirm new number. If not, click Edit number.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process for your new number.

Signal also mentioned that if someone else registers an account using the user’s previous phone number, the old user’s chat history, groups, and profiles will not be inherited.
