Sheriff believes her home was ‘targeted’ and doesn’t rule out kidnapper could strike again

On February 13, Luke Daley was detained by the Pima County Sheriff for several hours and questioned by the FBI in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. For the first time since being detained and released, Dailey said publicly that he had nothing to do with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, in an interview with Arizona family crime reporter Brianna Whitney.

“This is not me,” Dailey said, referring to the masked man in the doorbell camera video released by the FBI. “I don’t see any resemblance to me.”

He said he didn’t know who was involved in Guthrie’s disappearance and that if he had known, he would have been “happy” to tell authorities.

Daley said he was driving home in his Range Rover the night he was taken into custody when two sheriff’s cars pulled him over, got him out, handcuffed him and detained him for about four to five hours. When he asked what he was being detained for, they didn’t tell him.

Daley said he had just learned that Nancy Guthrie lived nearby but had never met her. He said he only knew who she was because his mother was following the case. Authorities towed his Range Rover for search and he eventually retrieved the vehicle. They also took his mobile phone to search, but he has yet to return it. Meanwhile, SWAT officers were conducting a raid on his home.

“The worst part is that my mom is not here,” Daley said, adding that she has health issues. “I was thinking about the worst-case scenario.” Without a mobile phone, he was unable to contact her, but found out the next day that she had gone to a neighbor’s house.

Daley called the ordeal a “nightmare” and said he felt like he couldn’t go out in public. He said he just wanted Nancy Guthrie to come home safely and clear her name.
