Martin O’Neill’s side beat their Glasgow rivals in a tense penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon.

The game ended goalless in both normal time and overtime, with neither side making a breakthrough within 120 minutes.

Celtic then held their nerve from the penalty spot. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Auston Trusty, Leo Hartart and Thomas Kavankara all converted penalties, while Ibrox duo James Tavernier and Jeddy Gassama fired over the crossbar.

The result moves Celtic into the last four of the Championship, where they will face St Mirren at Hampden next month for a place in the Scottish Cup final.

Tunekti took to social media to celebrate after the win and appeared to take a cheeky dig at the defeated hosts.

The Tunisian posted a photo of Celtic players celebrating at Ibrox on his Instagram Story, which was seen by his 282,000 followers, and added a clip of Tina Turner’s Simply the Best – a song traditionally played before Ibrox games and now adopted by Celtic supporters.

Tounekti said on Instagram: “Glasgow stays green and white 💚🤍.” The winger was named in the starting XI for the Ibrox game but his afternoon ended an hour before kick-off when he was substituted in the 57th minute, with Tomas Cvancara replacing him.

Meanwhile, Tunekti spoke of the behind-the-scenes support Celtic have given him while fasting during Ramadan.

Speaking at the weekend, he said: “Ramadan is a great month for Muslims, but fasting does require sacrifice. We can’t eat or drink anything until after midnight. I can eat and drink then, and of course, after the fast is over I can eat whatever I want.”

“Fasting is something I’ve been doing for a long time, so I know what I should and shouldn’t do to stay in good shape.”

“It’s something I’m used to and of course the club have provided me with amazing support during Ramadan. The nutritionist worked closely with me to tell me what I should and shouldn’t eat.”
