Mauro Icardi’s future at Galatasaray is back in the spotlight as talks over a new contract hit an impasse, opening the door to interest from abroad, including exploratory inquiries from Roma.
According to Turkish media Fanatik via TuttoMercatoWeb, Galatasaray has reopened contract extension negotiations with its captain and top scorer, but the terms have been significantly modified. The proposed deal would extend Icardi’s tenure until 2028, although one of the two additional seasons is optional.

The main sticking point is finances. Galatasaray are looking to significantly cut Icardi’s salary, which is reported to be €5 million per year, compared to his current salary of €10 million. While the Argentine remains a central figure on the pitch, the club are pushing for sustainability as a condition of extending his contract.

Icardi is currently contracted until June 2026 and despite suffering a serious knee injury during his time at Galatasaray, his influence has remained decisive. This season, he has scored nine goals in just 710 minutes in 16 games, averaging a goal every 79 minutes, often coming on as a substitute ahead of Victor Osimhen.
Overall, Icardi has now scored 70 goals in 110 games for Galatasaray, winning five trophies and cementing his status as a fans’ favourite.

Supporters openly backed the Argentinian during the recent game against Casimpasa, prompting Galatasaray’s hierarchy to speed up negotiations, although their financial stance has not changed.
This uncertainty has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. As well as Roma, clubs including Oviedo, Elche and River Plate have reportedly made tentative contacts, while lucrative offers from Qatar and Saudi Arabia have already been rejected.
