Racial slur at Sam’s Club leads to assault, South Carolina sheriff says

A Sam’s Club in South Carolina became a crime scene Saturday after a woman assaulted another customer, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident occurred at the wholesale club store at 733 Fashion Drive, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Sunday. That’s in northeastern Colombia, where the Village at Dunes Mall is densely packed with retail shops and restaurants.

According to a news release, deputies responded to an assault at Sam’s Club on Saturday around 1:30 p.m.

Inside the store, deputies spoke with a woman they described as the victim. The Sheriff’s Department said she told them she was the target of racial slurs from another woman while the two were waiting in line.

There is currently no information on the specific nature of the racial slur, nor any motivation for the hostile and derogatory comments.

The victim told officers the racial slur led to the two women getting into a verbal argument, according to the release.

The victim then told deputies that she was trying to take a photo of the woman who made the racial slur, when the woman punched the victim in the face, the Sheriff’s Department said. This led to a physical altercation between the two at Sam’s Club, according to the release.

No injuries were reported.

The woman accused of racial slurs left Sam’s Club before deputies arrived, the Sheriff’s Department said.

No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
