“It’s an icon of Portland. It’s part of Portland’s history,” said Kerry Tymchuk, executive director of the Oregon Historical Society. “It’s a performance venue…it’s been part of Portland’s DNA for many years.”

Despite efforts to save the mall, the current owners of the 29-acre property will submit their plans to demolish it entirely to the Portland Design Review Board.

The plan involves thousands of housing units, offices, retail, street and park space.

“It’s going to be a whole new neighborhood. We have a 30-acre site here. We’re envisioning new streets, new open space. There’s going to be retail buildings. There’s going to be thousands of new homes. It’s going to be a vibrant new neighborhood that takes shape over the next 10 years or so,” said Tom Kilburn of Urban Renaissance Group.
