Arsenal are riding the wave. Victory in Europe in midweek extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games and there was a feeling that the Emirates Stadium had become almost untouchable. At the same time, Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-0 in Michael Carrick’s first game in charge and headed south with confidence.
For much of the opening half hour, the game felt cautious rather than intense. Arsenal dominated possession but struggled to pull United, who sat back and waited. The breakthrough came through misfortune rather than invention, with Lisandro Martinez firing the ball into his own net to give the home side the lead.
What follows sums up United’s night. They created few chances but ruthlessly exploited a mistake made by Arsenal. Martin Zubimendi’s wayward backpass released Bryan Mbeumo, who showed impressive composure to beat David Raya for the equalizer.
Cunha brings magical moments
United started the second half with intent and it was rewarded almost immediately. Patrick Dorgu’s long-range half-volley flew past Raya, a strike that relied little on luck and more on skill.

Arsenal kept attacking, probing, and eventually equalized in the final seconds through Mikel Merino, who scored from close range after sustained pressure. At that point, a draw seemed like a fair outcome.
Then came the decisive moment. Substitute Matheus Cunha collected the ball 25 yards out and fired a thunderous shot that gave Raya no chance. It’s a narrative-changing goal, a reminder that in a sport obsessed with structure, personal quality still matters.
United held on to hand Arsenal their first home league defeat of the season and add an important result to Carrick’s early tenure.

Carrick’s influence has been felt
United still have a lot to improve on, especially in midfield, where they often finish second. However, the defensive organization looks sharper and the counterattack ideas are clearer.
Arsenal will be more frustrated with themselves than with their opponents. Zubimendi’s mistakes were costly, with several attacking players failing to perform at their usual level. In this type of game, slim advantages become decisive and Arsenal find that even dominance is not guaranteed.

It wasn’t a perfect performance from United, but it was effective. Arsenal controlled the situation for long periods of time, but Manchester United had the decisive moment. Ultimately, football rarely rewards individual control, and Cunha’s goal ensured this game would be remembered for years to come.
