Paul George scores 39 points in the 76ers’ 153-151 win over the Wizards

WASHINGTON (AP) — Paul George scored a season-high 39 points and the Philadelphia 76ers overcame the absence of Joel Embiid due to illness to beat the Washington Wizards 153-131 on Wednesday night.

George, playing his fourth game after being suspended 25 games for violating NBA anti-drug rules, made 15 of 22 shots, 6 of 12 three-pointers, six assists and five rebounds.

Tyrese Maxey had 28 points and nine assists in his third game back from a finger injury, and rookie VJ Edgecombe had 23 points and 10 assists.

Philadelphia’s starters shot a combined 45-of-65 (69.2%) in the third quarter to help the team score 47 points, Washington’s second-highest total at any time this season.

Anthony Gill scored a career-high 21 points for the Wizards. They have lost four straight and 20 of 21 games.

After five draws and four leads in the first half, the 76ers opened the scoring with a 24-4 run early in the third quarter.

A week ago, Philadelphia defeated Chicago 157-137 at home, scoring more than 150 points for the second consecutive Wednesday. The Sixers swept the season’s four-game series and went 11-1 in their final 12 games against Washington.
