Paris prosecutors raid X offices as part of an investigation into child porn, deepfakes and more

PARIS (AP) — The Paris prosecutor’s office said a search of the French offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform

The prosecutor’s cybercrime unit launched an investigation last January, the statement said. It is investigating alleged “collusion” to detain and distribute pornographic images of minors, explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, manipulation of automated data processing systems as part of an organized group, and other crimes.

Additionally, prosecutors have filed a request for “voluntary interviews” with Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino, CEOs of X from 2023 to 2025, scheduled for April 20. Employees of Platform X were also called to testify as witnesses in the same week in April, the statement said.

A spokesman for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a message posted on X, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the ongoing search and said it was leaving the platform, while calling on followers to join other social media.

“At this stage, the investigation is proceeding in a constructive manner with the aim of ultimately ensuring that Platform X complies with French law when operating in France,” the prosecutor said in a statement.

The investigation was first launched after a report by a French lawmaker claimed that biased algorithms on X could distort the functionality of automated data processing systems. The statement said the news was amplified after more reports emerged that X’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok was suspected of denying the Holocaust and spreading explicit deepfakes.
