Over 200,000 power banks sold on Amazon recalled over fire risks

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says more than 200,000 portable power banks sold on Amazon are being recalled due to possible fire risks.

The recall involves approximately 210,000 INIU 10,000mAh portable power banks, model number BI-b41, which were sold on Amazon between August 2021 and April 2022.

Lithium-ion batteries used in portable power banks “may overheat and ignite, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers,” according to a recall notice issued Friday.

The affected power banks come in black or blue casings with the INIU logo and paw print LED lights on the front.

The company has reported at least 15 incidents of power banks overheating, with 11 reports of fires. Three of the accidents resulted in minor burns and property damage totaling more than $380,000.

This recall only covers power banks with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21 and 000L21.

It is recommended that people who have purchased a mobile power supply stop using it immediately.

Customers can visit INIU’s recall page to verify product serial numbers and request a full refund.

Lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery widely used in electronics and appliances.

Because lithium-ion batteries pose a high risk of catching fire, they should not be thrown into the trash.

The CPSC advises affected customers to contact their city household hazardous waste collection center for instructions on how to properly dispose of the recalled equipment.
