March is a consistently warm month. At least that’s what long-term climatology says. Let’s look at the “normal” rate of warming in March. Let’s combine that information with the latest full-month forecast for March.
The long-term average high and long-term low temperatures in March are warming by about 1 degree every two days. The sun now has the ability to get our temperatures into the 40s and 50s. This is not our average high temperature today, but it will be by the end of the month.
So what is the “normal” or long-term average high temperature in March? Early in the month, temperatures in the southern half of Lower Michigan averaged 35 to 40 degrees. Traverse City and northern Lower Michigan currently have long-term average temperatures around freezing.

Afternoon temperatures in late March can easily reach 50 degrees, which means afternoon high temperatures can rise by 15 degrees.

Of course, we know that March days are not always “average” and can be much colder than normal or much warmer than normal.
Temperatures in March can reach into the 60s, but reaching 70 degrees is difficult.
Temperatures may reach 70 degrees around Tuesday or Wednesday next week. The storm system will take a warm track and bring strong southerly winds to Lower Michigan early next week.

Typically at this time of year, there are minor wind changes in the forecast, keeping our temperatures a little cooler than expected.
But now it looks like temperatures in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Jackson could reach 70 degrees early next week.
It does look like we will move into the high 30s and 40s late next week, which will be closer to average.
