NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Mayor Helena Moreno signed an executive order prohibiting any public official from signing “287(g) agreements,” a method by which ICE “deputizes” local law enforcement to conduct immigration enforcement operations, according to the city.
Under this Executive Order, no city official may sign or submit any application, letter of intent, certification, or other document intended to participate in a 287(g) or ICE agreement.
“Immigration enforcement is not the mission of the New Orleans Police Department — it never has been and will not be under my watch,” Moreno said. “NOPD will never ask anyone about their immigration status and will not be commissioned by ICE to do so.”

“NOPD’s top priority is public safety – responding to violent crime, protecting residents and building trust in the community. We will always comply with state law while protecting New Orleanians.”
Similar bans are underway in at least eight other states.
